What does the SPF in suncreams mean and preparation before sun exposure?

Posted on Tuesday Jun 2 0:00:00 UTC 2009

With summer sunshine here at last Shine in woking would like to give you some advice so you can be safe from burning in the sun.

A sun care product will help protect the skin from the sun’s UV rays, and prevent from sunburn and other factors which can damage the skin.

The best sunscreens protect against both, UVA which have been shown to penetrate the under layers of the skin, causing damage and contributing to the skin’s ageing process and UVB which causes sunburn damage to the skin.

DECLÉOR’S AROMA SUN SPF range contains UVA and UVB filters which will absorb and reflect the sun’s rays.  They also contain Luffa Oil which helps strengthens the skin’s natural protection by stimulating the skin’s melanin.

The SPF number is a measure of the effectiveness of a sunscreen.  The higher the SPF, the more protection a sunscreen offers against UVB. The SPF also indicates the time a person who has applied a sunscreen can be exposed to sunlight before getting sunburn in relation to the time they can be exposed without sunscreen.

For example, someone who would burn after 12 minutes in the sun without using any sunscreen would expect to burn after 2 hours (120 min) if protected by a sunscreen with SPF 10. The protection you gain from your sunscreen depends on many factors such as:

  • Your skin’s sensitivity to the sun
  • The amount applied and frequency of re-application. DECLÉOR recommends that you reapply your sunscreen every 1 and a half – 2 hours.
  • Activities throughout the day, for example, swimming, sports which can cause to perspire and lead to a loss of sunscreen from the skin.

Preparation before Sun exposure

DECLÉOR has two very good products in its sun range that can be used to prepare the skin before sun exposure: AROMESSENCE™ SOLAIRE for face and AROMESSENCE™ SOLAIRE for body.

The two products should be applied every morning approximately 7 days before sun exposure.  This will allow them to help strengthen the skin by boosting the cells self-defence mechanism and kick start the melanin production in the skin. The risks of sunburn are reduced and you can enjoy a long lasting tan.

You should however use a sun protection product when you start your sun bathing to ensure you do not burn and to reduce the ageing effects of the sun on your skin.
