The Legend of Valentines Day
Every February, across the country, chocolates, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who was St Valentine and why do we celebrate this time of year?
The history of Valentine's Day and its saint is a bit of a mystery However, we do know that February has be considered as a month of romance for a long time. The Valentine's day we celebrate today has influences from Christian and ancient Roman tradition.
Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine, all of whom were martyred. One legend suggests that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When the emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men.
Valentine however beleived the decree was unjustice and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius II sentenced Valentine to death. Other legends believe that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.
According to another legend, Valentine sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl who visited him during his confinement. Before his execution, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine.' This expression is still used on cards today.
Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is unclear, the stories certainly emphasize that he was a sympathetic, heroic, and romantic figure. His legendary personna gained popularity so by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.
